Concrete sector Netherlands leader sustainability

BERGEN OP ZOOM, March 29, 2024 – Betonhuis, the trade association for concrete companies in the Netherlands to which Concrete Valley Group is affiliated, has published its second Dutch CSC sustainability report. The Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) is the global standard for sustainability and responsible sourcing of raw materials in the concrete supply chain and sets high standards.

In the CSC Sustainability Report, Betonhuis publishes the data of all companies that have had their data monitored, including Concrete Valley Group. Through the so-called Monitoring Tool, the concrete companies registered their data related to sustainability and CO2 emissions. A two-pronged check was then done on that data. The first check is done by a certification institute and the second by an auditor.

Sustainability
The Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) is the global standard for sustainability and responsible sourcing of raw materials in the concrete supply chain. The requirements of the CSC are stringent. Reporting is done according to the standard of the Global Reporting Initiative to guarantee uniformity. Those who pass the inspection have good reason to be proud. In the Netherlands, the CSC inspection is carried out by Betonhuis. Meanwhile, so many concrete companies have joined that you can say that the concrete sector is a trendsetter in the field of sustainability in the Netherlands.

CSC Gold
Some 300 certificates have been issued worldwide. That the Netherlands accounts for a fifth of that with 58 certificates shows how seriously the concrete sector in the Netherlands feels sustainability is its mission. The zeal is remarkable because participation in the certificate program is voluntary and because compared to the global average, the Netherlands actually already scores very well. ‘People don’t know that we have been working on this for more than a decade. The concrete sector’s contribution to CO2 emissions in the Netherlands is only 1.6%. Compare that to a global average of 7%! Then you must already be doing something right,’ says Paul Ewalds, sector secretary for concrete mortar, consultant CSC and circular economy coordinator Concrete Valley Group.

Concrete valley Group achieved CSC Gold in 2023.
