Paddington Station

Stretching for more than 60 miles across the centre of London, the new Elizabeth Line operates between Reading and Heathrow in the west, through central tunnels, across to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. As a part of this significant development, Paddington Station was one of several stations that required upgrades and extensions.
The vent shafts for the redeveloped station come to the surface in two identical sub-station structures, and Concrete Valley was delighted to be awarded the contract for the precast concrete façade elements. In total, we supplied 2,200 HPC fins, 140 HPC façade panels and 21 conical surrounds.
The architects (Weston Williamson) recognised the need to integrate the new parts of the station with the Grade 1 listed buildings that surrounded it. The aesthetics of our HPC elements was therefore critical, and the stone-effect finish that we achieved was considered a great success.
By specifying the use of a specialist High Performance Concrete (HPC) mix, we were able to produce elements that were both light-weight and strong. With our state-of-the-art manufacturing capability, we were able to produce the fins with a single casting, delivering improved aesthetics and performance, whilst also keeping the lead-time down. All the components for this project were manufactured within 90 working days of commissioning.
